UPM Academicians Ponder the Future of Knowledge Creation in the Age of Digitalization

SERDANG, 7 May 2025 – In a sharing session held at Dewan Taklimat Serdang, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), renowned scholar Prof. Dr. Gazi Mahabubul Alam challenged academics to re-examine the role of philosophy and theology amidst the growing influence of technology and digitalization in academia.

The event, in conjunction of i-Lead Cafe Series titled "Publication: Does Philosophy or Digitalization or AI-ism Matter the Most?", drew a captivated audience of UPM faculty members who engaged in a lively discussion on the future of knowledge creation.

Speaking from his extensive experience in the field of educational studies, Prof. Gazi argued that while tools like AI and data analytics can enhance research efficiency, they risk eroding the deeper philosophical foundations that have long underpinned the academic enterprise.

"As universities face mounting pressures of competition and commercialization, there is a temptation to over-rely on technological solutions," he cautioned. "But true intellectual advancement requires not just technical proficiency, but a willingness to grapple with fundamental questions of purpose, ethics and the nature of knowledge itself."

The speaker drew on personal anecdotes to illustrate how one's philosophical and theological beliefs can profoundly influence the trajectory of an academic career. He emphasized the need for scholars to cultivate a nuanced understanding of the epistemological, ontological and theological frameworks that shape their worldviews and approaches to inquiry.

"Just as important as mastering the latest digital tools is developing a strong grounding in philosophical thought," Prof. Gazi remarked. "Only by integrating technology with a deep philosophical foundation can universities fulfill their highest calling - to expand the frontiers of human understanding."

The event sparked lively discussions among the UPM academics, who grappled with the challenges and opportunities presented by the rapidly evolving academic landscape. Many expressed a renewed appreciation for the enduring relevance of philosophy and theology in an increasingly data-driven world.

As the session drew to a close, the participants were left with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to striking a careful balance between technological innovation and philosophical rigor in their pursuit of knowledge.
