Blended Learning (BL)

Blended Learning (BL) is formal education program in which part of the teaching and content delivery is carried out online. According to the operational definition by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia:

"Blended Learning refers to a course that has a mixture of online learning mode and learning mode onsite learning face to face with the 30% - 79% of the course content and activities conducted online either support or replace face to face learning."

DePAN 2.0 introduces two types of blended learning namely supportive blended learning (PTS) and replacement blended learning (PTG). PTS aims to support face-to-face learning, i.e. 30% of learning materials are delivered in a blended manner based on the minimum composition formula of 7 materials, 3 activities, and 2 assessments is sufficient to achieve supportive blended learning.

While PTG aims to enable structured online learning in the range of 30% to 79% of Student Learning Time (SLT) based on the formula of learning materials (40%), learning activities (40%), and assessment (20%). This means, 40% of the total SLT for PTG needs to be filled with online learning materials. In addition, 40% of the total SLT for PTG is carried out with online learning activities, while 20% of the total SLT for PTG is allocated to assessment activities that have the same weighting as face-to-face and independent SLT.

The achievement of BL UPM status considers the implementation of PTS and PTG. By using BL, academic staff not only can carry out the teaching and learning more interactive and effective, implementing BL in classroom will also give the following advantages:

  • Personalised learning experience students improve engagement and motivation
  • Supports student-centered learning
  • Maximise utilization of face-to-face learning
  • Promotes flipped classroom
