10 Facts You Need to Know Regarding ChatGPT for Teaching and Learning

ChatGPT is an example of generative artificial intelligence (AI) application. It is based on AI language model that can play a vital role in supporting and enhancing the teaching and learning experience at tertiary level education. As an advanced natural language processing tool, ChatGPT is capable of understanding and generating text-based content, which can be useful for a wide range of academic tasks. It has the potential to revolutionize the way universities and higher education institutions approach teaching and learning, making the process more efficient, effective, and engaging for everyone.

The Centre for Academic Development and Leadership Excellence (CADe-Lead), UPM has released a guideline on the usage of ChatGPT in teaching and learning in February 2023 https://cadelead.upm.edu.my/upload/dokumen/20230202105701Guide_for_ChatGPT_Usage_in_Teaching_and_Learning.pdf.

Two webinars to create awareness and discuss issues on ChatGPT for teaching and learning have been conducted in February and April 2023, and one workshop was organised by CADe-Lead, in March 2023.

An advisory note was also released by the Malaysia Qualifications Agency to guide on generative AI usage at higher educational institutions. Read further details at https://www.mqa.gov.my/pv4/document/2023/MQA%20Advisory%20Note%20-%20AI%20Generatif.pdf.

The following are 10 facts you need to know regarding ChatGPT for teaching and learning.

1

ChatGPT is a large language model developed by the OpenAI company. It uses deep learning techniques to generate human-like text based on the input it receives. It can be used for a variety of natural language processing tasks, such as text completion, summarization, and answering questions.

2

ChatGPT can support various teaching and learning tasks through a productive prompting and chatbot interaction techniques to achieve the expected goals, such as follows:

  • Create lesson plans
  • Question answering
  • Text classification
  • Get fresh creative ideas or advise for a refined thought
  • Create rubrics of assessments
  • Translate sentences
  • Compose a write-up (e.g., social media posts, product review, promotional copywriting)
  • Summarize texts
  • Complete texts
  • Generate text in a particular style

3

Educators must encourage students to use ChatGPT responsibly to support a productive atmosphere for completing learning activities, and not to replace them as the learners. For students, the biggest warning should be that ChatGPT's "facts" cannot be taken as-is, and students should question every piece of text they get from an AI. Results from ChatGPT interaction should be scrutinized and edited accordingly to complete any learning tasks.

4

Redesign teaching by incorporating ChatGPT for productive learning struggle. Educators need to emphasize on experiential learning that allows students to build prompting and interaction skills with the chatbot, analyse the responses and synthesis findings as part of learning completion. Encourage students to learn collaboratively and engage in communications to reflect on their understanding.

5

Developing meaningful and relevant assessments are more important than investing in student surveillance techniques. Educators must redesign the assessment that are resistant from straightforward answers pasting from ChatGPT. Encourage students to truly think about how to condense and articulate their reports content in a way that can evolve their thoughts and stop students from hiding behind lengthy reports with pages of appendices.

6

Emphasize on assessments that allow students to develop and demonstrate understanding such as figurative related, oral assessment and live demonstration. Attainment of learning can be measured by letting the students express the process of completing the assessment, as well as practical demonstration as the outcome of learning.

7

Shift to a more dialogue-based approach to learning, consider assessment that requires students to reflect about the quality of the process rather than simply the outcome. Additionally, staging assessments, such as requiring students to submit drafts, receive feedback, and improve their work, are less prone to risk from violating ChatGPT to replace authentic learning experience.

8

Let students be empowered with ChatGPT as an additional learning modality and as a personal tutor that is available 24-7. The educator’s role of guiding students and monitoring them are very important to ensure students really attain the learning outcomes.

9

Provide feedback to your students on their use of ChatGPT, and encourage them to share their experiences with the teachers. This will help teachers identify areas for improvement and make any necessary adjustments to their teaching approach.

10

AI will continue to be more ingrained in our lives and AI literacy will be an important competency for students and educators in facing future challenges.
